Stromboli

Great recipes, both from Alyssa on The Recipe Critic site. I ran across a stromboli recipe on Facebook that made me look this one up. It included ham, so I added that in as well. Also, the recipe used butter and Italian spices brushed over the top of the roll instead of just EVOO, so keep that option in mind.

Also, Stromboli is a very small island off the northern coast of the island of Sicily, just west of the "toe" of Italy. The island of Stromboli is one of four active volcanoes in Italy.

First, the recipe for homemade marinara sauce, which is used as pizza sauce.

Stromboli

Here's a great video on putting a stromboli together from Rachel at The Stay at Home Chef.

Ingredients

Stromboli
Stromboli, NOT the island

  • 1 tube Pillsbury refrigerated pizza dough
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 12 slices salami
  • 16 slices pepperoni
  • 1/2 of a bell pepper, sliced and roughly diced
  • A handful of sliced black olives roughly diced
  • 1 1/4 cups mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley, optional

What to do with them...

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Lay out a sheet of parchment paper on the counter, then roll the dough out in a rectangle. Pillsbury pizza dough is a rectangle all rolled up tightly on itself. Carefully unroll it so you keep the rectangular shape all neat and tidy, then spread the pizza sauce onto the dough staying about 1 inch from the edges.
  3. Top with the salami, and then the pepperoni slices, then sprinkle the bell peppers, olives, and cheese all over the top of the meats.
  4. Roll up the dough on the long side, and pinch the edges to seal and fold where the seam is. Lay the stromboli seam side down in the center of the parchment, then pick up the parchment and lay it in the baking pan.
  5. Once it's in the pan, brush with the beaten egg and cut small slits across the top.
  6. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning, grated parmesan cheese, and the parsley if you're using it on top of the stromboli.
  7. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, but start checking it at around 15 minutes. It needs to be golden brown on top.
  8. Using the parchment paper, lift the stromboli off the baking sheet and place it on a large cutting board. Slice and serve with warm pizza sauce.
